The founder and the trainer of our Madawaska Chess camp for two consequent years was Roman Pelts. FM Pelts has represented Canada three times on the national team at the World Chess Olympiads (Luzerne, Switzerland 1982 and Thessalonica, Greece 1984, 1988). At the 1984 competition, he scored 8 points out of 11 without a single defeat. This remarkable performance placed him second in the overall individual standings.

As a teacher and lecturer, Roman's services are in demand across North America. He has taught at numerous chess camps and given seminars on a variety of chess topics in Canada and the United States. He has also conducted intensive training workshops for instructors from organizations such as the Chess'n Math Association.

In 2005, Roman was awarded the title of FIDE trainer at the FIDE executive board meeting in Dresden. This qualifies Roman to conduct FIDE Authorized seminars to train other chess instructors. Roman is the first person in Canada to achieve this qualification.
The chess counselor assisting Roman Pelts in 2006 was Nikolai Noritsin, CFC 2435; FIDE 2367, qualified as FIDE Master in 2005. In chess camp 2007 Nikolai works as a trainer.

In 2006 Mark Bluvshtein and Alexander Huzman conducted master classes at Madawaska Sunshine Camp. Mark Bluvstein is an International Chess Grandmaster, the youngest ever in Canada. He has been competing in chess events for 12 years, internationally for 9 years. At the age of 13 Mark became the youngest ever Canadian International Master. At the age of 16 Mark became the youngest ever Canadian International Grandmaster which is the highest title to be attained in chess.

Mark Bluvstein was voted Canadian Chess Player of the year for the years 2004 and 2005 for his tournament success in each year. He has represented Canada at the most prestigious team chess event globally: the Chess Olympiad in 2002 (Bled, Slovenia) and 2004 (Mallorca, Spain).

Mark was the Canadian under 18 Champion in 2005, under 14 Champion in 2001 and 2002. Mark was also the Canadian grade champion all three times he competed. He represented Canada as the Canadian Champion at the World Youth Chess Championships in 2001, 2002, and 2005.
